“DARLINGS OF THE SHADE GARDEN – MY MUST HAVE PLANTS”

Lynne a very knowledgeable plantswoman, has five Gold Awards at Chelsea and is obviously very passionate about her plants. Lynne has started exhibiting with the RHS in 2017. Her nursery is located in Billericay and was founded by Lynne in 2004
She has a shady garden and sandy soil and as a trained garden designer loves to design a garden full of texture and colour, flowering in Spring and Autumn as the canopy comes and goes. She went on to describe with beautiful images on the screen, her current favourites as follows:-
BRUNNERA a more silvery leaf, better drought resistant and good for dry gardens.
ASSURUM (wild ginger) Good ground cover
ASTRANTIA ROMA – Easy to grow, good pollinators, likes clay soil
The following plants she names fell into three groups:-
ATHYRIUM(A lady fern type) – Ghost – Lady In Red – Otopherum var.okanum
DISPURUM (Related to Solomons Seal) – Moonlight (variegated) – Night Heron (flowers like Solomons Seal) – Sessile Variegatum (variegated)
AMSONIA Blue flowers for Autumn colour, (Grown at Green Islands Nursery)
HARDY GERANIUM VARIATIONS – Phaeum (good in shade with dark burgundy flowers, good pollinators) – Cantab Rigiensa – Oxonianum
THALICTRUM – Tukkar Princess – Black Stockings – Splendide White (flowering April May and June)
TROLLIUS Globe Flowers – Cheddar – Golden Queen – Alabaster . Bees love them and easy to grow from seed.
POLIEMONIUM (Jacobs Ladder) – Golden Feathers (variegated) – Bressingham Purple (a dark leaved variety) – Stairway to Heaven (variegated)
Individual Species:-
SARIMA HENRY – Yellow Flower with heart shaped leaf
CHASMANTHIIUM LATIFOLIUM – a North American Grass – a bamboo like clumping plant
PENSTEMON SMALII – like partial shade, lilac and white flowers
VANCOUVERIA HEXANDRA (inside out flower) evergreen fernlike foliage, forms clumps
PIMPINELLA MAJOR ROSEA – Good pollinator, candy floss pink flowers
ADIANTUM VENSTUM – Angle fern, very delicate
LAMIUM ORVALA Big flowers, good pollinator and self seeds well
CALAMAGROSTIS BRACHYTRACHA Korean feather tail grass
LUNARIT REDIVIVA Perennial Honesty with pale lilac flower, transparent crescent shaped seed head, doesn’t like sun prefers partial shade
ARUNCUS HORATIO Loves Clay soil, grows to 6 – 7 ft. – known as Goats Beard, fern like foliage, red stems
As well as a really interesting talk Lynne had also brought along a fabulous selection of plants for sale and made available some very interesting leaflets with plants lists for deep shade, partial shade and sunny positions.
After the talk and lovely refreshments the raffle was called and the lovely prizes sourced by Jean and Keith were claimed. The Presidents Award for five perennial blooms was won by Maggie Williams
On 4th NOVEMBER The subject’, will be ‘ Encouraging Birds to your Garden’ by Glyn Evans.
We meet at 7.30pm in Little Waltham Memorial Hall ( CM3 3 LN) where there is plenty of parking.
We are a small friendly group and we are happy to welcome visitors and new members.

**General Club Information**
The Club was formed in 1983 with the object of providing members with the opportunity to meet and discuss items of gardening interest. (Club History)
Members enjoy free entry to all our evening meetings. In April we hold our Spring Show and garden visits are arranged for the summer months.
Members also enjoy the opportunity to purchase seeds and horticultural sundries from a well known seed catalogue up to 50% discount.
We are a friendly bunch of amateurs who are always learning about gardening in all its forms. Whether you have a window box or a vast area of land, please come and join us and share our passion.
