Report – August 2020

LITTLE WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB

Lockdown- we gardeners were so thankful that our hobby/passion gave us such a positive distraction from the pressures that lockdown forced upon us.

We were blessed with lots of sun and although rainfall was a little sparse at times,(until late August that is), fruit and vegetable harvests have been rewarding and we have learned lessons concerning the drought tolerance or otherwise of some ornamentals.

Like many other Clubs and organisations, the Gardening Club had to put its plans on hold from March onwards. However, in August, members enjoyed a social afternoon in a beautiful and interesting garden at Chatham Green, hosted by Marion and Peter Lawson. A vote was taken regarding the return to our planned programme of evening meetings this Autumn, following which it has been decided to hold a meeting on WEDNESDAY 7th OCTOBER, 7.30pm in The Memorial Hall. (UPDATE – POSTPONED UNTIL OCTOBER 6TH 2021) The speaker will be Darren Lerigo and his subject ‘A Very British Garden’ – The British love their gardens, but what does a British garden look like and why?

With the help and advice from Little Waltham Memorial Hall Committee, we have been able to put together plans that will enable us to follow social distancing rules, using well spaced seating, hand sanitising etc. However, because of the restrictions, refreshments, raffle and sales tables will be omitted. Audience members must wear face masks and the speaker will be provided with a plastic visor so that, together with our microphone, he will be well and truly audible.

Depending upon the level of attendance and the ease with which we manage the Covid 19 restrictions, we will endeavour to hold a meeting in November, (UPDATE – POSTPONED UNTIL NOVEMBER 3RD 2021) the subject of which will be the importance and value of trees.

We gardeners, like so many of our plants, are Hardy Perennials and are of a mind to continue our Club meetings as much as possible during these challenging times.

Good Gardening!
